Two articles this week, Zhou et al. and Branch & Wulfmeyer, stress the influence of land use on local climate. As so often nowadays neither offers any real data but only models treated as data. That said they look sound and Branch & Wulfmeyer offers an optimistic outlook for many of the world's marginal landscapes.
On the other hand Zhou et al. demonstrate aridity as a self-amplifying process. Regardless of causes and human influence – most continents have been continuously drying for at least 20 million years – this is something to keep an eye on. Land use patterns are an important part of the feedback mechanisms and recent deforestation an important driver.
