I totally disagree with Fogarty. Of course it’s nice to see your name on a paper. But with authorship come obligations. As she says herself, all the final results that made it into the publication were achieved after she left and she had no control or oversight over them. Scientific fraud happens. If and when it’s exposed, all authors have to be held fully responsible. If you want to avoid that, don’t become an author. It’s as simple as that. As she states she was acknowledged in the acknowledgements. That’s what they are there for.
